In cricket, age often decides trust before ability does. Once a player crosses a certain number, doubts arrive quietly, especially when the moment is big and the pressure is real.
“Why did they give this importance over to this uncle?”
Sattar Javid has heard lines like that many times. And almost every time, he has answered in the same way. A steady run-up. A calm release. A wicket that changes the mood of the ground.
At 53, Sattar Javid is one of India’s leading wicket takers in grassroots cricket and the Bowler of the year (leather) & Veteran bowler of the year (leather) at the CricHeroes Awards 2025, finishing the season with the most wickets. But his journey did not begin with numbers or recognition. It began with survival.
When survival was bigger than dreams

Sattar grew up in extreme poverty. As a child in Kolkata, survival itself felt uncertain. Even small comforts felt like luck. He worked from a very young age. In those years, sport was not a career plan. It was an escape. It was a way to feel alive when life was heavy.
“When surviving itself becomes difficult, even the smallest thing feels like a gift from destiny,” Sattar says.
Football came first. Cricket came later. At 11, Sattar moved to Hyderabad with very little, but with an instinct to stay close to sport. He wanted to watch and learn. He was always active, always around games.
Cricket entered his life through his younger brother. There were not enough players in local games, so Sattar joined in. He was the weakest at the start. The one filling numbers. The one nobody expected much from.
Even relatives kept their distance. No one supported him or his brother. Respect was rare. Belief was missing.
A late start

Sattar believes he arrived late to cricket.
“If I had started 30 years earlier, I would have been in India’s team,” he says.
He left cricket after marriage. Responsibility took over. He worked multiple jobs and later ran a furniture business, trying to keep life stable. Cricket slowly slipped into the background.
When COVID hit, his business shut down. What remained was time, reflection, and a feeling he could not ignore.
He returned to cricket through box cricket and then through a few old friends. Slowly.
Even then, trust did not come easily. He would play matches and still not be given the ball. Sometimes, not until 17 or 18, bowlers had already bowled.
Still, he stayed. He watched. He waited.
The turning point

In 2022, Sattar started using CricHeroes.
The first match he scored on the platform earned him a Man of the Match award. Soon after, calls started coming in. Teams wanted him. Livestreams captured his spells. Wickets followed.
During this time, cricket became his constant.
“It does not matter if I got what I wanted or not. Today, people know me as a star,” Sattar says.
A teammate reflects on what Sattar has achieved.
“Who would have thought that a 53-year-old man from Hyderabad would become one of India’s top wicket takers? But Sattar made it happen.”
Sattar believed it was possible, even when others did not.
What cricket gave him back

“In poverty, nobody gives you respect,” Sattar’s wife says. “The respect he got came because of cricket.”
That respect shows today. Sattar walks through his chawl and greets people warmly. Kids recognise him. Young players look up to him. In the Hyderabad cricket community, people speak about him with admiration.
Cricket gave him something money never could. It gave him identity.
“Money can give you happiness, but passion gives you recognition,” Sattar says.

Why this award matters
Sattar Javid is the Bowler of the year (Leather) and Veteran bowler of the year (leather) at the CricHeroes Awards 2025. He finished the season with the most wickets, delivering under pressure, again and again.
He is also one of India’s leading wicket takers overall, not because he started early, but because he stayed long enough to matter.
At 53, Sattar still runs with purpose. Still bowls with belief. Still enjoys every wicket.
More than anything, he is grateful for what cricket helped him build.
A name. A place. And respect among the community he belongs to.
